The Industry Skills Certificate is a new initiative by the Royal Society of Biology, designed to support the employability of scientists into industry, either for the first time or from academia. The certificate will recognise a set of skills and knowledge gained through the participation in online and in-person training courses, which in addition to existing qualifications, can support a career move into industry.

There has been extensive research undertaken to establish the skills requirements in industry, through reports of potential skills gaps and advice from the Society's Employer Advisory Group (EAG). EAG is a direct interface between employers/industry and the Royal Society of Biology, which allows us to understand industry requirements better. This has resulted in this tailored certificate, which has shown to be of value to industry.

In addition, participants can register with the Society’s CPD scheme, through which an individual can further develop their skills and work towards achieving the Registered Scientist (RSci) professional recognition award. This certificate supports competency development for Registered Scientist (RSci) in the one or all of the following competency areas:

  • Application of knowledge and understanding
  • Personal responsibility
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Professional practice
  • Professional standards

The Industry Skills Certificate is designed for anybody wanting to gain skills that will support a career in industry. Not only is it beneficial for PhD students, early career researchers and postdoctoral researchers, but it is also relevant to those currently working in industry or creating a start-up company who would like to gain core business skills.

The actual cost will be based on your individual training needs and the courses you select. If you are an organisation and would like to register staff in bulk for this certificate, or require any further information please contact our Training and Development Officer Amrat Khorana or call 0203 925 3453.
