There has been press speculation in the last few days that the Department for Business Innovation and Skills (BIS) is considering significant reductions to funding for higher education and or to research. These stories began to circulate on 22nd November apparently on the basis of a leaked memo and as such we are not offering direct comment.

The Government has recognised the importance of science for society and the economy, and has been vocal about its commitment to maintaining investment. The Society has been active in encouraging and supporting these developments and continues to put forward the sound case for investment in science and the importance of the stability of that funding base to ensure long-term benefits and skill development. HM Treasury tell us that the economy is showing signs of recovery – so now is the right time to invest in science so it can contribute to further growth.

The Society will be making this case strongly on behalf of our community.
