The Society of Biology is pleased to announce the shortlist for the 2014 School Biology Teacher of the Year Award. The award seeks to identify and to recognise the very best and most inspiring biology teachers in 11-18 education.

We are delighted to announce that the following individuals, listed in alphabetical order, have been selected as the finalists for 2014:

• Caroline Molyneux – Balshaw’s CE High School
• Dan Quinton - Caterham School
• Catherine Russell - Altrincham Girls’ Grammar School

Congratulations to all of the above teachers and thank you to everyone who nominated a teacher for this award. Dr Mark Downs FSB, chief executive of the Society of Biology, says: “Excellent teachers have a profound positive effect on their students’ learning, career choices and aspirations. It is rewarding to know that once again, the entrants for this award are teaching outstanding and innovative lessons which inspire their students. Many congratulations to our three shortlisted candidates.”

For the final stage of judging, the finalists will submit a short case study which highlights how they have enhanced their students’ learning.  These case studies will be made publically available on the Society's website following the announcement of the winner later this year.

The winner will receive: A tour of Darwin’s Beagle specimens and hands-on experience in a world class genetics lab with Science and Plants for Schools; in addition to £500 for themselves and up to £500 of free Oxford University Press resources for their school. The winner will also receive prizes for their classroom from UK 3B Scientific Ltd and the National Science Learning Centre.
