In January, a record 5,057 students took part in the first round of the British Biology Olympiad. Medal winners will be invited to an awards ceremony at the Royal Society in June.

The 121 students with the highest scores were invited to take part in a more demanding examination to identify who will attend the finals at Warwick University later this month. There they will compete for a place in the team which will represent the UK at the International Biology Olympiad in Bali this summer.

Dr Andrew Treharne FSB, who chairs the group of volunteers which organises the competition, says: "Well done to these students and a huge thank you to all the other students and their teachers who contributed to this year's record participation in the British Biology Olympiad. The Society of Biology and the UKBC volunteers were very impressed with the high standard of entry this year. I very much look forward to meeting the finalists next week at Warwick University where their practical skills will be tested by members of the School of Life Sciences."
