The RSB’s annual careers fair saw students attend in their hundreds to learn more about career options, meet potential employers, and improve their CV writing and interview skills.
The RSB’s Bioscience Careers Day, held on Saturday 26th October at Middlesex University London, attracted undergraduates, recent graduates and sixth form students from all over the UK, to discover more about potential careers in the biosciences after school or university.

Throughout the day professionals led talks on career options in fields such as plant sciences, clinical science, policy, communication, as well as research in industry and academia.
Over 20 exhibitors from universities, learned societies, and life science organisations from across the country showcased the varied opportunities available for bioscience graduates. Exhibitors provided information about postgraduate study, learned society membership, and job opportunities, alongside careers advice.

New additions to the programme included a topical panel addressing skills gaps, and a session on how to make the most of learned society memberships. One panel discussion gave students the opportunity to hear from consultancy, publishing and patent law professionals, whilst another panel on plant sciences gave a broad oversight into options available in plant research, academia and industry.
Event delegates also had the opportunity to build upon their employability skills with a CV workshop and practice interviews.

Joanne Needham CBiol MRSB, professional development manager at the Royal Society of Biology, said of the event: “The sheer variety of careers available to students with a bioscience degree is phenomenal. If you don’t want to stay in research or academia, the skills from your degree will be invaluable in many careers paths.
“Along with showing some broad career options, students were also able to hone their CV writing skills to get to interview and then practice their interview technique with employers.”
If you were unable to attend this year’s Bioscience Careers Day, speaker presentations are online with a selection of photos available to download.
