Research Ethics

Where clinical and laboratory research dictates the need to involve human subjects, clinical samples and/or patient-identifiable data, there is generally a need to seek and obtain a favourable opinion from a research ethics committee. This is particularly important for research involving drug trials, medical devices (including CE/UKCA  labelled products), DNA analyses, exposure to radiation, etc,  The process is not always intuitive, and neither is it always entirely straightforward, frequently leading to delays in obtaining necessary opinions before commencing practical research. Being aware of how ethics committees operate will prove helpful to potential applicants.

This course will be delivered using the Zoom meeting and training platform. During an event lasting three and a half hours (allowing for a comfort break) the fundamental principles of ethics and medical ethics, and most specifically research ethics, will be explored, drawing upon relevant examples and providing practical guidance on the process of seeking and applying for an ethical opinion. Opportunities will exist to ask questions and seek further information form the course tutor. 

This half-day training course will be of particular interest to practitioners working in research involving human subjects (including access to their health records), carers, healthy volunteers, and clinical samples (e.g. body fluids and tissues, but also including medical images, etc) and subject-identifiable data.

Lindsay Murray is a graduate microbiologist, Chartered Scientist, Chartered Biologist and Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology, with something closing on 40 years of practical experience in clinical and laboratory sciences. He is currently employed at The University of Edinburgh's College of Medicine & Veterinary Medicine, where he delivers training to medical under-graduates and others from a range of professional backgrounds, and is a Chair or other member of numerous research local and national ethics committees.
