A weekend on the Jurassic coast focusing on field studies, natural history and conservation.
After the success of our previous residential field trips to the Isle of Wight, the RSB Wessex branch is delighted to offer members and their guests another trip, this time set on the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site.
The itinerary for the weekend has yet to be finalised. It is anticipated that participants will arrive late on Friday afternoon/evening and depart on Sunday later in the afternoon. Proposed activities include bird ringing, moth trapping, ant surveying and a visit to Kimmeridge bay where attendees will investigate shore life and visit the world class Etches collection at the Museum of Jurassic Marine Life. There may also be the opportunity to participate in a river study.
Travel and accommodation
Leeson House is a comfortable and spacious centre in a grade 2 listed mansion situated outside Swanage. The house is set within 7 acres of inspiring and diverse grounds. The bedroom and dormitory accommodation is clean and comfortable with shared facilities.
There is ample parking at and it is anticipated that the group will mainly use the center minibus once there. The nearest train station is Wareham and there will be opportunities to carpool and lift share.
Location and accessibility
The centre is wheelchair accessible and there is accommodation suitable for wheelchair users. However, Some activities during the weekend will not be suitable for those with restricted mobility eg rough paths, rocky beaches and steep cliff paths.
Cost and booking
This trip is intended for adults only and places are very limited so advanced booking is essential.
- £50 per night - includes accommodation, packed lunch and guides/ tutors all based at Leeson House.
There are likely to be a few additional costs associated with on or two activities including a small charge for minibus use and the fossil museum, however the aim is to keep the costs as low as possible. Participants will be responsible for paying for their evening meals at local pubs/ restaurants. Evening meals at a local hostelry will be organised for those who choose to participate.
COVID-19 guidance
The Wessex branch will run this event in line with Government advice and will notify registered guests should the event need to be cancelled due to COVID-19 health and safety guidance.
