Wessex branch

A weekend on the Jurassic coast focussing on field studies, natural history and conservation.

This event will take place from Friday 19th to Sunday 21st July

After the success of our previous residential field trips to the Jurassic Coast, Wessex branch is delighted to offer members and their guests another trip to Leeson House inn Langton Matravers.

The itinerary for the weekend has yet to be finalised but proposed activities are likely to include bird ringing, moth trapping and ant surveying. There will also be a visit to Kimmeridge bay which will include investigations of shore life and a visit to the world class Etches collection museum of Jurassic marine life to see the newly discovered pliosaur skull. There may also be the opportunity to participate in a river study.

The programme will not be the same as it was on the previous Leeson House weekend although we will visit some of the same sites.

Travel and accommodation

Leeson House is a comfortable and spacious centre in a grade 2 listed mansion, situated outside Swanage. The house is set within seven acres of inspiring and diverse grounds. The bedroom and dormitory accommodation is clean and comfortable with shared facilities.

There is ample parking at Leeson House and it is anticipated that the group will mainly use the centre's minibus once we are there. There will be opportunities to carpool and list share. The nearest train station is Wareham.

Cost and booking

Numbers for this weekend are limited and at this stage we ask you to sign up with an expression of interest so that we can get an idea of numbers.

  • £74 per person per night - includes full board (breakfast, packed lunch, evening meals and snacks) and guides/tutors, all based at Leeson House.
There will be some small additional costs associated with some proposed activities including a small charge for minibus use and the fossil museum.
