Learn basic copyright law


Copyright is a form of intellectual property and as such has various laws associated with it. Understanding the rights conferred by copyright is important for researchers both from the aspect of creating their own intellectual property, and making use of others'. This program will help introduce researchers to the key laws and rights associated with copyright, case studies, and how to manage risks.

Who is this course for?

This course is for anyone involved in research, from project students to lab heads.

Course tutor

Dr Christopher Haggarty-Weir has a joint PhD in biophysical chemistry and molecular parasitology from the Universities of Edinburgh (School of Chemistry) and Melbourne (Faculty of Medicine). He was primarily supervised by Professor Alan Cowman, FRS, AC, from the Walter and Elize Hall Institute, for his research into malaria vaccine development. During his PhD at the University of Edinburgh, Dr Haggarty-Weir worked for 16 months in intellectual property management for Edinburgh Innovations. Additionally, Dr Haggarty-Weir received training in intellectual property from the World Intellectual Property Organization, receiving various certificates from IP management to IP law.

Following his PhD, Dr Haggarty-Weir has been running his own life science consulting firm, supervising a team of 5 consultants, focusing on business development and IP consulting for bioscience start-up companies and technical consulting for investors in biotechnology companies. More recently he became the co-founder and COO of SpectCell, an Edinburgh-based stem cell technology company.

Certification and Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

A certificate of attendance will be provided after the event.
We evaluate all of our training events, to make sure that we maintain a high quality of training.

This event has been approved by the Royal Society of Biology for purposes of CPD and can be counted as 21 CPD points.

Cancellation Policy

Cancellation with over 10 working days' notice = 100% refund, less 25% admin fee
Cancellation with 5-10 working days' notice = 50% refund, less 25% admin fee
Cancellation with less than 5 working days' notice = 0% refund

The Royal Society of Biology reserves the right to cancel or reschedule a training event up to 10 working days before the event is due to take place. A full refund will be issued.

If the Royal Society of Biology is required to cancel or reschedule a training event with under 10 working days' notice due to unforeseen circumstances, a full refund will be issued and 50% of attendee prepaid travel will be compensated.
