Science sells
Biologists should not underestimate how valuable their skills are in management and business. Dr James Deverill and Dr Alison Howell explain how to bridge the gap

Most biologists, when starting their first degree, probably never envisage that their long term career might be in a purely commercial environment. The reality is that many find themselves working in business. In many ways this is a very positive and rewarding environment for a trained scientist to exercise their skills, knowledge and experience. To quote Douglas Adams in The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul: “I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I needed to be.”
Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) subjects are increasingly recognised as the foundations on which future UK economic growth will be built. This presents an opportunity for biology graduates to use their transferable skills to bridge the gap between business and science.
