Letting Citizen Science Take Flight
We need new ideas when it comes to funding big science projects, says entomologist Dr Rebecca Nesbit

News that the Royal Institution's (RI) building was up for sale earlier this year was met with outcry – Nobel laureates and TV personalities rallied for the Government to buy the building and guarantee its future. Others raised the valid point that 'because it's old' isn't a reason to spend £60m of taxpayers' money. The immediate financial concern has now been solved by a donor, but the question still being asked is if the RI is struggling to attract visitors, wouldn't making its activities relevant to today's audience perhaps be better than an appeal for funding?
