Molecular Biology of the Cell (6th edition)
Bruce Alberts, Alexander Johnson, Julian Lewis, David Morgan, Martin Raff, Keith Roberts and Peter Walter
Garland Science, £75.00
This was a groundbreaking textbook in its first incarnation, and the sixth edition is as good as ever. Written in a readable style, with consistently excellent illustrations, it covers a breadth and depth of information that is truly impressive. It is a weighty tome, both literally (it is almost too heavy to hold) and metaphorically.
However, it treats the reader gently, starting with the basics, and progressing logically into the complexities of each subject area. It must surely remain the go-to textbook for cellular molecular biology.
